What is an Otoplasty?
An otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a facial surgery technique that is used to adjust the shape, size, and position of the ears. The ears are largely responsible for the overall balance and symmetry of the face. When a person has large ears or ears that protrude too far from the head, their facial harmony may suffer. Patients often pursue an otoplasty to enhance their self-confidence and overall facial balance. Since the ears can often be the subject of teasing or bullying, ear surgery can also performed on children.
How Much Does an Otoplasty Cost?
The cost of an otoplasty can vary depending on the extent of treatment necessary to deliver a patient’s desired results. When you schedule a consultation with Dr. Go of Newport Plastic Surgery, he will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your specific cosmetic goals. Once this treatment plan is developed, we will be able to provide you with the exact cost of treatment. We also offer financing through CareCredit® to make this and other treatments more affordable.
How is an Otoplasty Performed?
During an otoplasty procedure, which is performed under local sedation or general anesthesia, Dr. Go will make small incisions within the folds of the ears. This results in virtually invisible scarring, so patients don’t have to worry about scars affecting the appearance of the ears. Through these incisions, cartilage will be manipulated or removed to reshape, resize, or reposition the ears. Once the desired results are achieved, the incisions will be closed and the treatment will be complete.
What is Recovery Like Following an Otoplasty?
After an otoplasty, you may need to wear bandages or a headband for a couple weeks to allow the ears to heal. It will also be necessary to avoid sleeping directly on the ears during the recovery process. Patients will also need to avoid sports or other activities that could injure the ears or otherwise affect their healing. Patients can expect some bruising, swelling, and sensitivity in the treatment area, but these effects typically fade within several weeks.
