Gynecomastia

Caused by a hormone imbalance, gynecomastia is a condition in which a boy or man has where a man has developed excess breast tissue. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of the male population and it can affect only one breast or both. Certain drugs such as alcohol, anabolic steroids, medications containing estrogen, marijuana, and some medical conditions (cancer, impaired liver function, among others) can cause or contribute to enlarged male breasts, a large percentage of cases are of unknown origin.

While not a serious problem, it can be tough to cope with and can cause social embarrassment. Gynecomastia can resolve on its own, but if it persists, medication and surgery can help. The results of male breast reduction surgery are permanent, although significant weight gain can cause the reappearance of enlarged breasts.

The best candidates for gynecomastia are those who are in good overall health, do not smoke and have realistic expectations for the results. Some of the benefits of surgery include a firmer, flatter, more contoured chest which improves self-confidence and an improved body image.
